Position: Global Gathering Psychosocial Support Consultant

Responsible to: Deputy Head & Head of Team CommUNITY, Events Lead, Director of Community Mental Health Program

Compensation: $3000 stipend

Location: Remote; ability to travel to Lisbon, Portugal

The Role

The Global Gathering Psychosocial Support Consultant will be responsible for delivering mental health support, recommendations, and mental wellness advocacy to the digital rights and internet freedom communities who will be participating in Team CommUNITY’s Global Gathering, taking place near Lisbon, Portugal in mid September 2023. 

As an official part of the Code of Conduct Committee, the consultant will be responsible for the facilitation and organizing of mental health services and activities delivered in-person, with some follow-up taking place in a remote/virtual setting. 

Digital rights and internet freedom communities often comprise frontline digital rights or human rights activists; community organizers and leaders working under great duress and stress. Ensuring that they are able to have a safe space to learn, collaborate and seek allyship at TCU events is of the utmost importance.

Key responsibilities

  • Serve as an official representative of the Global Gathering Code of Conduct committee. This includes providing input into COC decisions regarding violations and helping implement actions agreed upon by the committee. 

  • On-site, conduct 1-1 check-ins to community members that are in distress or a crisis state. In addition, provide support post-event if needed. 

  • Prepare coping techniques to help community members find ways to healthily deal with stressful situations or events

  • Coordinate support with other TCU Wellness Team members, including but not limited to: Head of Team, Events Lead, and Code of Conduct committee members

  • As needed, collaborate with the Director of Community Mental Health program to define and execute the most appropriate method of care. 


What we need (required qualifications):

  • Diploma or College Degree in Psychology, Social Work or Humanitarian sciences

  • Minimum of seven years of experience providing mental health support to traditionally  marginalized or underrepresented populations.  

  • Be exceptionally informed on racial-trauma, particularly with afro-diaspora communities.. In addition, have sensitivity to intersectionality, and understands how class, gender, sexuality, and cultural background impact group dynamics and contexts

  • Training in trauma-informed interventions 

  • You are flexible. We are a distributed team and strive to accommodate meetings/gatherings across multiple time zones.

  • You have an appreciation for the role that freedom of expression, human rights, or digital rights plays in our daily lives. 

  • Ability to be in-person in the Lisbon-area of Portugal in mid-September 2023. 

What we would like (preferred qualifications):

  • Previous experience managing conflicts in a community setting or in working with Code(s) of Conduct at conferences or other community-driven events.

  • Experience using secure communication / digital security technologies, and/or being tech savvy enough to learn.  

  • Prior experience in conflict mitigation is highly preferred. 

  • Fluency in another language other than English is a bonus

  • Ability to work well in a group setting.
