The Role

The Digital Communications Manager is responsible for both traditional and digital strategies to reach and engage Team CommUNITY’s audiences in support of our mission and vision. This position plays a central role in our community engagement strategy so we are looking for a strong communicator who values or has experience in community engagement or community building activities.

The position will achieve communication goals via both Team CommUNITY’s digital communication channels and via traditional media outreach. The Digital Communication Manager plays an important role in helping elevate Team CommUNITY’s brand for external audiences; cultivating its active and large community of digital rights defenders located in all regions of the world; and supporting projects related to fundraising, and partnership development. This position is an excellent match for an individual seeking to use their solid communication skills and passion for digital rights in an international environment.

This position will be guaranteed for a 12-month contract, with potential for extension.

Key responsibilities

  • Brand management: Maintaining or developing our brand assets across digital platforms, ensuring that the overall messaging and marketing strategy is in line with our community building and community engagement strategies. This can include maintenance of our website.

  • Managing communication channels: Responsible for design and implementation of TC’s digital communications including newsletter, social media, blog, among others. In addition, build and manage a library of digital assets for use across digital media.

  • Oversee digital marketing campaigns: Design, create and oversee strategies for digital campaigns or initiatives, including those that fall under fundraising, community outreach/engagement, and promotion of our reports. 

  • Copyediting, copywriting, asset production: Help edit or create copy and design of diverse materials, such as reports, slide decks, promotional materials. 

  • Facilitation and/or coordination of events: Play a central role in the creation of landing pages and outreach materials for both digital and in-person events. Additionally, help facilitate online workshops and sessions on a monthly basis, including coordination with speakers. 

  • Community engagement: Creating or iterating communication assets in the service of the community we serve.

  • Traditional media: Help find speaking opportunities for team and community members, provide support with outreach to traditional media. (While this is not central to the job, these skills are highly valued)


What we need (required qualifications):

  • 3-5 years work experience in the use of digital communications tools and platforms, work in a nonprofit organization or movement space preferred

  • Strong digital communication skills, including creating visual messages and writing/editing for the web

  • Proficient use of online collaboration tools (e.g. collaborative editing, chat and group coordination software)

  • Familiarity with production software (e.g. formatting a photo, building a slide deck)

  • Basic e-publishing skills (knows basic HTML and CSS); familiarity with creating or maintaining websites on software as a service (SaaS) website builder (e.g. Squarespace, Wix)

  • Experience in facilitating, managing, or production of online events

  • Understands the importance of communications, branding, and fundraising in the success of a nonprofit organization. In addition, passion for community-centered communications.

  • Able to work independently, organize a high volume of work, manage deadlines, and carry out tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Attention to detail, with ability to handle confidential information in a discreet and professional manner.

  • Values working cooperatively with others; strong cross-cultural communication skills, and ability to work with diverse and vulnerable populations located throughout the world

What we would like (preferred qualifications):

  • Experience in or understanding of digital security, digital rights, or internet freedom issues and topics

  • Fluency (speaking or writing skills) in a language other than English

  • Experience working with remote, collaborative and distributed teams

  • Experience working with or participating in multilingual and multicultural online communities

  • Education: You can tell us about your degrees or academic qualifications, but we’re more interested in what your passions are and what you can do. If your degrees are part of that story, great — but no formal education required.
