Community Health Village 2022: A Look into Collective Healing
The 2022 Community Health Village is focused on different types of trauma and ways to address them, while helping us imagine how to heal together by looking at individual, community as well as organizational pathways towards collective healing.
The Village consists of educational and experiential sessions which are scheduled for the months of October and November 2022. The sessions
provide knowledge and perspectives from diverse mental healthcare practitioners, and offer different modalities of healing. We encourage you to attend as many as you can, to better understand the scope of healing pathways available.
How to RSVP
You must RSVP for each session individually, noting that some sessions have a limit of participants. Sessions will take place on either Zoom or BigBlueButton, and the link(s) to your session(s) will be emailed to you a few days before the event.

Wednesday, October 12
Deconstructing Trauma
Speaker: Nawal Muradwij

Trauma has become a commonly used mental health term. However, most people have a lack of understanding of what constitutes trauma, and how it impacts their body and mind.
By attending this session, participants will learn about:
How trauma is defined and its psychological impacts, according to the field of psychology.
How trauma shows up in the body and its effect on psychological health
Critics of the application of Western trauma models, especially for communities in the global south,
How trauma is understood and expressed within a person’s environment and communities.

Trauma & Identity: a deep dive on intersectionality

Each person has unique social and cultural identities that overlap. Intersectionality recognizes this, acknowledging that everyone has unique experiences of discrimination and oppression.It also pushes to be sensitive to the fact that many things can further marginalize specific groups of vulnerable people, leading to specific traumas. By attending this workshop, participants will learn about:
Identity, intersectionality, privilege and marginalization
Gain an understanding of how individuals with multiple marginalized identities experience trauma.
How to center and emphasize people's lived experiences and perspectives when attempting to promote/research/evaluate health through a trauma-informed lens.

Healing in the In-Between: Exploring Migration and Vicarious Trauma

This session is focused on helping digital rights defenders learn skills and information to enable them to better cope with the abuses and difficulties they regularly witness and/or encounter in their work, helping them to minimize the negative impact it can have on their life.
By attending this session, participants will have an opportunity to:
Collectively hold their experience together with other digital rights defenders, as a way to minimize the impact it can have on their mental, physical and social health. In addition, learn how collective reflection can benefit their own communities.
Gain an understanding the implications of vicarious secondary stress and migration trauma, and how it impacts individuals
Learn about mindfulness tools that engage with healing and medicine

Responding to Defeat and Creating Communities of Hope

Individuals that work on digital rights do their work in oppressive contexts, usually with minimal resources, that can challenge their sense of self, make them feel demoralized, and question whether their work has any significant impact.
In this session, participants will explore experiences of defeat in their activism, and learn how to create communities of hope. By attending, participants will:
Explore what defeat and hope means and looks like in their lives/work
Discover visible ways in which their communities and networks are already responding and holding on to hope.
Learn how to create safe spaces to talk.
Gain wisdom on how to build a sense of solidarity and connectedness.

Processing Rage 101

Anger is a mobilizing emotion that helps us confront injustice, danger, and unsafety. However, interlocking systems of oppression pathologize the anger of marginalized peoples to keep them small and passive, feeding them oppressive narratives that their rage is unproductive and/or violent. Black, Brown, and Indigenous folks are further criminalized for their rightful rage.
In this session, participants will delve into their own relationships with anger and begin to explore how to process our loving anger and rightful rage in ways that feel more liberating and empowering.

Your Own Oxygen Mask First: An Intimate Conversation for Digital Rights Leaders about Burnout

In this facilitated group coaching session, a limited number of leaders will come together for an intimate conversation about the burnout they are experiencing as leaders in the digital rights space.
Digital rights leaders that participate will have an opportunity to:
Explore their experiences of burnout
Identify contributing factors to burnout and brainstorm solutions on how to address them.
Lean how to set an example and model healthy behavior for their employees, community members, and others.
Connect with and hear from other digital rights leaders on how they have been handling their burnout.

Increase equity across their teams, and understand what true diversity, inclusion and equity looks like.

Digital rights defenders hold significant memories of pain, injustice, and struggle that they carry with them every day. Many times they forget that smiling is an act of resistance.
This workshop is focused on helping individuals learn how to collectively create joyful muscle memories that can help them shape a better future. Individuals will learn how to create their own resilient and creative tool(s) against their bodies' memories of pain.
In this session, we will defend the importance of expressing fire, rage, what seems to us extremely unfair, but from a care towards ourselves. To take care of wrath and fury is to take care of fire. Not to control them but to be able to continue manifesting them without burning oneself. To embrace our body, our fragility is also to light the fire.
