The Role

This position is a trusted partner to the Director/Head of Team CommUNITY, responsible for overseeing operations and financial due diligence and ensuring programmatic and strategic implementation of Team CommUNITY's programs and services. Using strong management and interpersonal skills, knowledge of organizational change, and financial acumen this position is expected to establish the strategic direction for long-term sustainability of Team CommUNITY. 

The successful individual will have a demonstrable track record of driving change, organizational development, financial management, human resources, and program management across diverse geographies and communities. They will also have experience in international human rights organizations, particularly with the digital rights or internet freedom communities. Crucially, the successful candidate will have strong people management skills, the confidence to lead, inspire and motivate multi-disciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

50% Operations and financial due diligence

Working with ARTICLE 19's Projects and Finance teams, this position will:

  • Oversee and maintain effective and efficient operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures;

  • Initiate and deliver financial and other reports to donors;

  • Ensure contracts, donations are managed effectively and with due diligence checks carried out regularly;

  • Oversee team budgeting, and the implementation of programmatic budgets, so as to monitor progress and present operational metrics to internal and external stakeholders;

  • Oversee the development and delivery and reporting of operational plans and goals, in line with the strategic plan; and within agreed budgets and timescales.

40% Programmatic support and management; supporting communications strategies

  • Support the Head of Team in managing and implementing programs that advance the digital rights and internet freedom communities;

  • When needed, assist in the development and facilitation of our virtual programming;

  • Ensure external and internal communications are timely and in-line with strategic goals;

  • Working with contractors, oversee the backend of various technology platforms.

10% Support fundraising

  • Support the Head of Team in grant writing and forecasting of fundraising opportunities.

What we need (required qualifications)

  • You have a commitment and appreciation for role of freedom of expression, access to information, and digital rights;

  • At least 5 years experience with management leadership preferably within non-profits or movements;

  • Excellent financial management skills;

  • Experience working with multiple timezones;

  • Proven ability to initiate, improve and manage operational systems, particularly in a multi-donor environment;

  • Experience of strategic organizational policy development and implementation;

  • Experience in creating public-facing communications or communications strategies that support digital rights and/or internet freedom;

  • Experience with program management or overseeing multi-timeline or multiple projects at once;

  • Strong analytical skills, with good attention to forward planning and achieving strategic objectives combined with proven capacity to manage procedures and detail;

  • Ability to self-direct and self-start, to work well under pressure, manage tight deadlines, and to prioritize the management of a heavy workload;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including fluency in written and spoken English;

  • Proven ability to supervise, support and motivate staff.

What we would like (preferred qualifications)

  • Awareness of digital security protocols;

  • Familiarity with US government or international human rights donor landscape;

  • Experience with information, digital, or organization security protocols and practices;

  • Ability to communicate in one of ARTICLE 19’s languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, or Arabic.

Salary: $70,000 USD per annum

Location: Flexible, ideally ARTICLE 19 region
